Texas Mutual has a rich history of investing in the communities where we work and live. All across Texas our commitment can be seen, from our financial support of United Way, to the time our employees dedicate to giving back. We partner with local, regional and statewide initiatives that make a positive impact on Texas. Below are a few of the causes we support.
Texas Mutual's annual United Way campaign is the company's largest fundraising event. Employees dedicate their time to plan fundraisers and many employees support the cause financially. We also host Day of Caring volunteer events at each of our five offices during our annual campaign. In 2016, Texas Mutual raised more than $140,000 for the United Way.
Texas Mutual cyclists participate in the MS150 every spring to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis research. Employees ride their bikes 150 miles from Houston to Austin and raise money in the weeks leading up to the event. In 2016, the team raised more than $58,000 to help end MS.
State Firefighters' and Fire Marshals' Association of Texas
Texas Mutual partners with VFIS of Texas to provide grants for volunteer fire departments across Texas. The grants total more than $145,000 and help fire departments pay for potentially lifesaving certifications, training and equipment.
College safety grants
Over the last 16 years, Texas Mutual has awarded $4.5 million in safety education grants to help maintain safety institutes at Kilgore College, Midland College, College of the Mainland in Texas City and Del Mar College in Corpus Christi. More than 30,000 people have been trained through these programs.
American Heart Association
Texas Mutual's focus on wellness goes hand in hand with our commitment to the American Heart Association. As a corporate sponsor, Texas Mutual and our employees support the organization and its annual event, the Austin Heart Walk. Texas Mutual CEO Rich Gergasko has also contributed to the American Heart Association and Austin Heart Walk by serving as a member of the Executive Leadership Team for the Heart Walk and as chairperson for the Executive Challenge fundraising portion of the Heart Walk. The leadership provided by Gergasko and other members of the Executive Leadership Team allowed the Austin Heart Walk to raise more than $1 million for charity for the first time in 2015 and then again in 2016.
Ronald McDonald House
Our regional offices visit the Ronald McDonald Houses in their communities several times a year to prepare dinner for the families staying there whose children are receiving treatment for a serious illness or injury. Our Dallas regional office has been visiting the Ronald McDonald House for more than 20 years.
These are just a few of the organizations we support. Our corporate and regional offices also give back through the following efforts:
