April 12, 2018
It's that time of year when our CEO, Rich Gergasko, shows his competitive spirit in the American Heart Association's MoveMoreATX CEO Challenge. At Texas Mutual, we know that staying active and healthy supports a safe and productive workplace, and this challenge is one way that Texas Mutual brings awareness to the importance of wellness in the workplace.
Rich joins 10 Austin-area executives in a competition to see who can add the most movement to their daily routines during the three-day competition period. In last year's National Walking Day competition, Rich placed second with 61,000 steps, which is about 27 miles. This year, the challenge spans three full days (April 11-13) and competitors will be tracked on overall activity, meaning more rigorous tasks yield more points. We'll keep tabs on Rich's activity and provide updates on social media. Be sure to follow Facebook or Twitter for live updates.
We encourage you to participate in Move More Month. Find tips below on how you can make your workplace more walkable and active:
- Take stretching or walking breaks. Encourage employees to give their muscles the attention they need, especially if they are working in physically demanding jobs. Stretching reduces stress and helps break up the day so that employees are more productive, and walking is a good way for office workers to stay active throughout the day.
- Opt for the stairs. Add posters in stairways that commend your employees for taking the extra steps, and posters in elevators that encourage them to choose the stairs next time.
- Move more. Try leading group stretch breaks or conducting walking meetings.
- Team effort. Consider finding a group 5K or walking challenge to give your employees a common goal to work toward.
- Park farther. Don't pick the front row parking spot; choose one farther back to get extra steps.
