Tips on avian flu, resources for fall prevention and more
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
New guidelines from the CDC aim to shield employees exposed to birds and livestock from avian flu. Poultry farmers, veterinarians and slaughterhouse employees are among those at higher risk. The CDC recommends avoiding close contact with sick animals, carcasses and raw products in addition to using proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and hygiene practices to minimize the risk of infection.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)
Resources to prevent falls in construction
The construction industry reports a high number of fall injuries each year, with roughly 300 fatalities and 20,000 nonfatal incidents. To support this year’s National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction week, NIOSH has compiled free fall prevention webinars, training materials and planning tools in English and Spanish.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
Automatic emergency braking to become standard in new cars
Starting in September 2029, all new cars and light trucks in the U.S. will be required to have automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems. This technology can help prevent crashes with other vehicles and pedestrians, saving an estimated 360 lives and preventing 24,000 injuries annually. The new rule is part of a broader effort by NHTSA to improve road safety.
