Texas Mutual invests $2 million in policyholders' safety efforts

Texas Mutual’s safety grants are a powerful tool for preventing workplace injuries and illnesses. In July, we opened this year’s safety grant program, inviting eligible policyholders to apply on a first-come, first-served basis. After a thorough review process, 1,340 policyholders were approved for a $1,500 safety grant, totaling over $2 million. This latest round of grants brings our total contribution to over $11.9 million since 2016.

Adapting to unforeseen challenges

When Hurricane Beryl hit Texas this summer, we quickly adjusted our initial plans. We postponed the grant opening to allow businesses and families to focus on storm safety and recovery. Additionally, we directed policyholders to BeforeDuringAfter, an online resource we had recently launched to help small businesses navigate natural disasters and other unexpected events.

Streamlined application process

Once the grant did open, we utilized a new virtual queue system. This innovation streamlined the application experience and helped manage high demand. Depending on customer volume, policyholders were placed in a virtual line to wait until their turn to apply.

Grant details and popular safety investments

Safety grant applicants were instructed to list the types of equipment they planned to purchase and explain how it would improve safety and health conditions in their workplace. Each approved policyholder received $1,500 toward the purchase of approved safety equipment listed in their application, including ergonomic, safety, disease and illness prevention and industrial hygiene equipment. The top three categories of items purchased were:

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) for hands, ears and eyes, including safety glasses, work gloves, ear plugs and face shields
  • General safety items such as safety signs and training materials
  • Ergonomic equipment like adjustable office chairs, standing desks and ergonomic keyboards
