NIOSH highlights women's roles in coal mining
In recognition of National Miners Day on December 6, NIOSH is focusing on the contributions of women in coal mining. A recent study analyzing 50 years of data from the Coal Workers' Health Surveillance Program revealed that women make up 5-10% of the coal mining workforce. The research found that while women miners often work in less dusty environments, resulting in lower pneumoconiosis rates, they typically receive lower pay and have fewer advancement opportunities. NIOSH continues to study gender-based health risks and disparities in mining and other industries.
